We should obey the wise council that we receive. It only makes logical sense.... right?
Twice a year, the members of our church get the great privilege of watching (or if you are super duper lucky, attending) General Conference. It's 2 full days of listening to our Prophet, apostles, and other leaders give us wise and loving guidance. It's one of my favorite things to do. In our family we like to play games like 'if you hear the word "tithing" you get to pick a candy out of the "tithing" bucket... if you hear the word "scriptures" you get to pick a candy out of the "scripture" bucket.... basically, you score as much candy as you would at Halloween. That's my kind of game. Also- we are teaching our kids to take notes. If they don't understand what's going on- then they can draw a picture or at the very least, draw a picture of the guy's tie who's speaking..... just little things to try and get them to quietly pay attention during the 8 hours they get to sit still.
Chip and I also take notes. I like to doodle on mine. I have always been a doodler. You should look at some of my Jr. High papers.
Back to the story......
So on Sunday morning a Sister Rosemary M. Wixom, who is our Primary General President (over all the kids in the church) gave a lovely talk called 'The Words we Speak'- How we speak to our children and the words we use can encourage and uplift them and strengthen their faith. There was one part of her talk that I felt drawn to. She said " The answer to our prayer of how to meet our children’s needs may be to
more often technologically disconnect. Precious moments of opportunity
to interact and converse with our children dissolve when we are occupied
with distractions. Why not choose a time each day to disconnect from
technology and reconnect with each other? Simply turn everything off.
When you do this, your home may seem quiet at first; you may even feel
at a loss as to what to do or say. Then, as you give full attention to
your children, a conversation will begin, and you can enjoy listening to
each other."
One would think that someone was brilliant as I am would actually do as I am told.... and considering that I felt a strong prompting by the Holy Ghost while she was saying it, I should probably assume it was directed toward myself.........
but I'm not that brilliant.
So the next evening, I was looking over my pretty doodles on my conference notepad..... and then set it down and picked up my Ipad to probably do Facebook or something equally as delightful.... Miles and Dexter were trying to get my attention. Over and over and over they were hitting my legs, fussing, and whining. They were fed. They had a drink. They had a fresh diaper. Considering the fact that they were so whiny most of the day... and so naughty... and frankly getting on my last nerve, I chose to ignore them to get a moment of sanity for myself.
I placed my conference notes down on the end table, turned on an obnoxious cartoon, got out a bucket of blocks for the boys, and walked into the kitchen to have some one-on-one FB time. You know, because apparently that talk really sank in.
Not 5 minutes later the boys were laughing hysterically. At our house, this is never a good thing. It means mischief is afoot.
I carefully peaked in the living room hoping that they would, I don't know.... just be making funny faces at each other, or telling each other 'knock-knock' jokes...... but of course they weren't. Instead of a good joke- they were using my beautifully doodled on conference notes to make confetti. It was EVERYWHERE. 8 hours of carefully taken notes .... shredded.

Breezi who doesn't listen to the Spirit- 0
Someday I will learn to listen to guidance given.
Maybe.
In my defense- I would spend more time with my children at night if they weren't so exhausting all day long.... hahaha. Somehow, I don't think my logic works very well.

What the heck?! I've been missing you!
So here's the skinny on my MIA. I've been trying to get skinny. That's the gist of it.
I haven't ever wanted to say anything, because I'm not one who can stick to ANYTHING diet related. I would diet for maybe a month and then quit because the scale would stay the same for 5 or so days, so I would get frustrated and then throw in the towel and gain 10 pounds more than I started at. It's a really frustrating cycle.
In March I seriously decided enough was enough. This was getting so ridiculous! When my kids asked me why I was fat, I knew I had to change. Change is hard for me.
1) I love food.
2) I don't like to exercise.
3) I don't tell myself 'NO' to food.
4) did I mention that I don't like exercising?
So with my past telling me that I was just going to fail anyway and I'm doomed to spend my life with a gigantic ba-donk-a-donk and arms with flaps that could fly me across the Atlantic if I could get them going fast enough- I have been trying to keep everything on the down low just in case I was a failure yet again.
--THEN--
a day or two into my "diet" the girls had their well-check appointments.
HOLY NEWSFLASH!
Maggie, is quite the chunk-a-munk. She has never been stick thin, and never been below the 95% on the growth charts. When Maggie had her 4-year check-up after the boys were born, Maggie had gone from 95% to 3 lines off the chart in weight. Due to the whole "I don't care, get what you want out of the fridge because I can't stand up out of this chair because I'm a million weeks pregnant with twins" attitude I had- Maggie had gained like 18 lbs in one year. Yikes. She has continued to stay on that line for the past three years. Always the 3rd line above the growth chart.
Alli has always been pretty average. Hovering somewhere between 65-85% on the growth chart. This year she reached the 95%.
The pediatrician gave me a smack-in-the-forehead lecture. Both of my girls needed to lose 14lbs this year. Alli will get down to the 75% on the chart- which is good, because puberty is just around the corner, and might as well get the best foot forward on that. 14lbs will put Maggie back on the chart.
Talk about hitting the brick wall. I let my 10 and almost 7 year old girls get this way because of MY poor eating habits! I, in no way want my precious daughters to battle this ugly way of life. To never know what someone is really thinking of them. To never get to shop at regular stores because nothing fits them outside of plus size stores. To never get to go on dates with the cute boys in high school. To never fit in with the popular crowd. It was/is AWFUL.
So. After this brick to the head announcement- I quit my diet.
You heard me right. I quit my diet.
Instead I made a lifestyle change. The whole family has made it.
Less and less processed foods, staying in a certain calorie range, more whole foods, whole grains, moderation, more fruits and veggies, less fats and meats- and gasp, less cookies. We have been going on 1-2 hour walks 3-5 times a week. We have been playing Disney dance party on the Wii, we have been doing regular dance parties, we have been doing workout videos all together.
I also religiously use My Fitness Pal, where I daily track my fats, calories, and weight.
In the 7 weeks I've been doing this, I have lost 20lbs. It's a start. I'm not anywhere close to my goal- but it's progress. I'm proud of the progress.
Anytime I get frustrated I just have to say to myself "This is not a diet, it's my new lifestyle." and if I really must eat that cookie/brownie/cheesecake- then I have to do another workout video.
Anyway- so since I've been bustin' my hump- yes, I've had more energy in the daytime.... but around 10:30-11pm every night my body shuts down and makes me sleep.
Stupid body.
If you didn't realize... I always blogged at night after everyone went to sleep..... usually around 1-2am. I can't blog if I'm sleeping. Rude, right?
I will figure out a rhythm to my new lifestyle. I need to. Not blogging/crafting/eating ice cream while everyone else is in bed is really cramping my style.
Until then...... I miss you.
